UniFi now available in more than 750,000 homes in 48 areas nationwide

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 – Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s (TM) high-speed broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi, is now available in more than 750,000 homes in 48 areas nationwide following its launch in March last year, the telecommunications giant said today.

According to TM, UniFi is currently on track to achieve its target of 1.3 million premises passed by end 2012 at the conclusion of its first phase of HSBB roll-out.

Officially launched in four areas in the Klang Valley on March 24th, the UniFi service expanded to cover 23 areas nationwide in June and 48 by end December 2010.

“In conjunction with UniFi’s phased service expansion to more areas nationwide, TM is in the midst of a more aggressive go-to-market campaign to educate consumers and attract new subscribers,” TM CEO Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa said in the press release today.

“We have already passed the 30,000 service subscription mark recently and with the number of orders closed surging to an average of 2,500 per week towards the end of the year, it is a clear sign that more and more Malaysians are spending their time online and are hungry for more bandwidth.”

Zamzamzairani said UniFi was ideal for homes and businesses “ready to embrace an aggressive digital lifestyle” as the service delivered a faster, richer and more reliable online experience which allowed access to richer digital content.

Inked in September 2008, the RM11.3 billion national HSBB project is a public-private partnership agreement between TM and the government to develop next generation high-speed broadband infrastructure and services.

TM will invest up to RM8.9 billion into the project while the government will contribute RM2.4 billion on an incurred claims basis based on project milestones reached by TM.

TM currently offers triple-play service – phone, high-speed broadband and internet protocol television (IPTV) HyppTV – to residential areas and double-play service to businesses.
Residential packages range from RM149 to RM249 per month, while business can subscribe to three packages worth RM199, RM599 and RM899 per month.

Additional premium HyppTV and video-on-demand offerings are available for a nominal subscription fee. TM has pledged to continue enhancing its HyppTV offering by adding more “exciting” channels from time to time.
