The third leak today of a future BlackBerry model suggests RIM may plan a much more aggressive release for its flagship. The Torch 2 would roughly double the speed of the original Torch's two years old 600MHz chip with a 1.2GHz processor. BGR noted it would also be the first BlackBerry phone ever with hardware graphics acceleration, giving it tentative support for 3D games that have been off-limits in the past.
Unlike some of the past leaks, some of the launch details are more concrete. RIM would ship the Torch 2 in a matte silver trim sometime in the summer, again courting AT&T as the US exclusive.
While it won't be as fast as some of its competitors, the best of which should have dual-core processors and 800x480 or higher screens, the upgrade could be important to reverse several months of sliding market share.
BlackBerry 6 significantly modernized the OS but has been attacked as the lack of new hardware left it without any real 3D capability and much longer load times than the iPhone 4, Droid X or its other peers.
